Did you know that on average one person dies from oral cancer every hour of every day? Although not as common as breast or prostate cancer, oral cancer can be just as deadly. In fact, generally, there is only a 60 percent chance of survival at five years after diagnosis. But it doesn’t have to be this way. At LakeView Family Dental, we provide oral cancer screenings to identify this serious condition as soon as possible. Our compassionate team has the experience and tools that can lead to earlier, more accurate diagnosis, which can mean the difference between life and death.
Although the early signs can be more subtle, oral cancer can manifest in many ways, including the following:
If you have any of these, contact us or your doctor and ask for additional tests.
One of our dentists will visually examine your gums, cheeks, tongue, lips, and mouth, looking for any of the above signs. Although they have the expertise to find potential early signs of oral cancer, it is possible for them to miss something. That’s why, at LakeView Family Dental, we also use advanced technology to back us up. Our VELscope tool shines a blue light onto oral tissue and makes healthy tissue fluoresce. Potentially cancerous areas do not, alerting us to spaces that may need more attention. Through these two screening methods, we can help our patients seek additional necessary testing, which can lead to diagnosis and ultimately, and hopefully, successful treatment.
Like with most cancers, the odds of survival dramatically increase the earlier oral cancer is diagnosed. In fact, patients can have an 80 to 90 percent success rate when it’s detected during the early stages of development. Unfortunately, most cases are discovered later on, leading to the higher mortality rate. By having regular oral cancer screenings, you can ensure that it is caught and treated sooner.
At LakeView Family Dental, we are dedicated to helping you maintain your oral health now and for many years to come. We invite you to schedule an appointment with us to see the difference we can make in your dental experience.
